Originally from the New York Metropolitan Area, Sydney Otis is a second-year Master of Public Health Candidate at Washington University in St. Louis, with a concentration in Urban Design. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Washington University in St. Louis, studying Sociology with minors in American Culture Studies and Global Health and Environment. She is provisionally Certified in Public Health by the National Board of Public Health Examiners and is an active member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, where she currently serves as a member of the National Board of Directors.
Sydney strives to work at the intersection of design strategies, planning, and the social context of health and chronic disease, working to address the structural and systemic barriers built into physical space that impede the well-being of marginalized communities. As an intern and research assistant with organizations across St. Louis, Chicago, and New York, Sydney’s analysis, engagement, collaboration, and leadership skills have supplemented her academic and professional growth.
