Rise & Jefferson Collaborative Team Up: South City Health Festival 2015

Following a grant approval and award of $14,500.00 toward this healthy community initiative at the recent CBN Awards Ceremony, Jefferson Collaborative is sponsoring a major event on April 25th, 2015, made in part possible by technical assistance and grant funding from Rise Community Development.

Rise and Jefferson Collaborative are happy to invite you to attend the South City Health Festival 2015, hosted at Fox Park!

This FREE Event on Saturday April 25th, 2015, beginning at 8AM, will be a fun and informational community gathering offering opportunities to get involved with neighborhood strategies to promote local health. With everything from walking groups and Tai Chi classes, cooking demos and samples, food trucks and urban gardening instruction, youth eye exams – to even the possibility of a free bicycle helmet – it promises to be a great day for everyone involved.

CDA Honors Rise and Others at 2015 Community Development Week Awards

The Community Development Administration (CDA) of the City of St. Louis  held its 2015 Community Development Week Awards Ceremony last night, 4.8.2015, at the Jewel Box in Forest Park. Rise received one of the awards for “Housing Development Projects of the Year” for our work at Fox Manor Apartments. Stephen Acree, Executive Director and President of Rise, graciously accepted the award highlighting the work of the staff at Rise. CDA promotes neighborhood growth and stabilization through the production of new and rehabilitated housing, especially for low and moderate income people.

Awardees included:

Community Advocate of the Year – Judge jimmy Edwards, Executive Director of the Year – Otis Williams of the St. Louis Development Corporation, Housing Development Projects of the Year – Rise for Fox Manor Apartments along with The St. Louis Housing Authority and McCormack Baron Salazar for North Sarah Place II, Housing Developer of the Year – Rubicon Corporation, Youth Program of the Year – Harambee Youth Training Program, and Neighborhood Improvement Programs of the Year – Hamilton Heights Neighborhood Organization along with Tower Grove Neighborhoods Community Development Corporation.

Thanks to CDA for doing a great job on the production of this event and it was good to see so many people in attendance who do the hard work of community development in the St. Louis area. Commerce Bank and Enterprise Holdings sponsored the event.

 

CBN & Rise Training: Revitalization in Transitional Neighborhoods

On March 27th, Rise Community Development in collaboration with Community Builders Network of Metro St. Louis held a thoughtful and informative training session on Revitalization in Transitional Neighborhoods at Harris Stowe State University.

At the forefront of the discussion: Building a St. Louis Regional Community Development System

Background information on local and regional collaborations, successful revitalization implementations from other cities and regions, future plans and recommendations, as well as outreach strategies and more were all discussed in a variety of formats. These included: informational slideshows and presentations, video conference discussions and Q&A with out-of-town community leaders, as well as a breakout session for the attendees at the end of the Training Session.

Speakers:  

David Boehlke is a nationally recognized expert in neighborhood revitalization and the country’s leading authority on Healthy Neighborhoods. David has worked in more than 125 communities over his 30-ear career. He has served in numerous capacities as a consultant and executive director of several nonprofit organizations. He holds degrees in geography and acrhitecture from John’s Hopkins and Harvard.

Dr. Sally Scott joined the Housing and Land Use Program in 2012 and is focused on building collaborative partnerships with academic, nonprofit, government and for-profit organizations in Iowa and across the Midwest. Previously, Dr. Scott worked in Baltimore, MD, leading collaborative community development initiatives to revitalize neighborhoods at risk of decline and mitigate the impact of foreclosure on low and moderate-income families.

Dr. Todd Swanstrom is the Des Lee Professor of Community Collaboration and Public Policy Administration at the University of Missouri – St. Louis, (UMSL), and specializes in urban politics and public policy. He has an MA from Washington University (1971) and a Ph.D. from Princeton (1981). Prior to joining UMSL Todd taught at Saint Louis University and the Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy at the University at Albany (SUNY).  He also worked as a neighborhood planner in Cleveland and as the Director of Strategic Planning for the City of Albany, NY. He is presently doing research on neighborhood dynamics in weak market metros and the causes and effects of high levels of involuntary residential mobility.  Todd uses the resources of his endowed professorship to support the Community Builders Network of Metro St. Louis

2015 Rise Up Festival – Celebrating Revitalization Call for Artists

The 2015 Rise Up Festival – Celebrating Revitalization is happening August 21, 2015 on Washington Avenue between 16th and 17th streets directly in front of our office at 1627 Washington Avenue. Artists, this is your call! Please take the time to review the call and enter the Art Show.

This is a fine art and fine craft Show. At Rise we connect key groups working to revitalize communities and neighborhoods in the Greater St. Louis area. The festival is part of our continuing efforts to raise awareness about the importance of the revitalization of the St. Louis metropolitan area. Our work provides invaluable connections that have a positive and lasting impact on people, the neighborhoods they live in, the economy and the region.

The Rise Up Festival Art Show will feature 30 artists from the St. Louis Metropolitan Area, a main stage with music from The Dirty Muggs, Bottoms Up Blues Gang and Jeramiah Johnson Band. The festival will also offer children’s activities, street performers, and yummy treats from some of St. Louis’ best food trucks.

Entry Instructions:
There is a $10 non-refundable jury fee payable through PayPal (whether you have a PayPal account or not) or by mailing your jury fee check to Rise, 1627 Washington Avenue St., St. Louis, MO 63103. Checks should be made payable to Rise. Images will not be eligible for jury consideration until the application and payment have been received by Rise. The booth fee is $75 and payable at time of acceptance to the show.

Artists applying to the Rise Up Festival Art Show must live in the St. Louis Metropolitan Area. Artists will be required to check in on-site prior to set-up. Please do not apply if you cannot remain at the show throughout the scheduled hours.

Artists must submit a total of 5 images for jurying, 4 images representative of the artist’s work to be exhibited, 1 of the artist’s booth display. A total of 30 artists will be selected during the jury process. A reserve list of additional artists will be selected from the submitted entries.

All decisions are final. We reserve the right to refuse any application. All work exhibited must be comparable to work shown in submitted images. Show Management reserves the right to ask that any work that is inconsistent with the juried subject be removed. Artist guarantees the accuracy of the description of the works presented and the authenticity of the work as the creation of their own hands. Commercial studios involved in multiple or volume production will not be considered for the show. Artists may sell prints of their original artwork. Rise reserves the right to use accepted artist images for promotional purpose only.

Jurying will take place June 3, 2015. Jurying is conducted by a panel of experienced arts industry professionals and is based solely upon the quality of work as illustrated in submitted digital images. The same jury panel will be on-site to judge the Art Show. One artist will be selected for the Best in Show award. The winning artist will receive $150 cash, their images will be on display on the Rise website for one year and they will be invited to return the following year, exempt from the jury process.

Each artist is provided a 10’x10′ booth space. All work exhibited must be limited to the 10’x10′ space. Only one booth is available per artist. A small storage space will be provided at the back of the booth. Artists will receive access to electrical service, no generators are permitted. Artists are responsible for providing all display booths, racks, tables, light fixtures and associated display equipment and supplies. Please make sure you bring enough weights to secure your tent in the event of strong winds or storms.

Off-duty City of St. Louis Police officers will provide security; however, Rise is not responsible for any damage that may occur to work, equipment or other material due to rain, wind, fire, theft, etc.
